This tart recipe, taking inspiration from the classic German dessert Black Forest gateau, is perhaps even richer and more decadent than the original. I’m not a fan of plain cream in most of its guises, so the whipped cream of the original is eschewed for chocolate, chocolate and..er…more chocolate (with a cherry on top!).

210g plain flour
40g cocoa
100g unsalted butter
100g icing sugar
1 whole egg
A pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger
50g dark chocolate (70%)
